The number of Americans suffering from serious adverse health effects after taking ivermectin in the treatment of Covid-1 treat has more than doubled because anti-parasitic drugs were falsely claimed to cure the virus.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has so far this year received 49 reports of human poisoning and other serious side effects from the use of ivermectin in the treatment of covid. According to data published in the Financial Times, the equivalent number for the whole of 2020 was 2 cases.
The use of ivermectin has increased following the promotion of some conservative commentators as a possible treatment for Covid-1 for, although it has not been approved by regulators for the treatment of the virus. According to data from IQVIA, a research institute, the prescription for outpatient medicine at pre-epidemic levels increased 24-fold, reaching 88,000.
New Mexico authorities said this week they are investigating whether the deaths of two people with Covid-1 were associated with excess levels of ivermectin.
And in a sign that reporting adverse reactions to the FDA could underestimate the extent of the problem, there have been 26 drug overdoses in New Mexico since the beginning of December, up from just two in the previous 11 months.
Susan Smolinsk, director of the New Mexico Drug and Information Center, said: “In almost all of our cases, it is being used to prevent or treat covid, and 13 of these have ended up in a healthcare center.”
“Nervous diseases like coma, convulsive hallucinations, dizziness, convulsions. These are the things we are seeing from this high level, ”he said.
Ivermectin can be used in small doses by humans to treat parasitic worms or head lice but it is much more commonly used by veterinarians to treat parasites on horses.
The FDA has so far this year received 110 reports of serious adverse reactions to all forms of ivermectin use, compared to a total of 120 cases throughout the year 2020. Agency, which warns that the drug is dangerous if taken in large doses.
“You are not a horse. You are not a cow, ”the FDA tweeted last month. “Seriously, everyone. Stop. “
Preliminary results in some Study Scientists have suggested that ivermectin may reduce mortality in some Covid-1 patients. But the FDA says current data does not support its use for virus prevention or treatment and has not approved it.
In February, Mark, who makes ivermectin, said there was no scientific basis from pre-clinical studies for possible therapeutic effects against Covid-1.
Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, said the increase in calls to the poison center is worrying.
“Some people are getting official prescriptions from doctors and using standard doses used for parasitic infections. Others are taking the veterinary version of the drug and using doses that are not calibrated to humans, ”he said.
Dr Adalaja said the drug had become politicized during the epidemic and there was no clinical evidence to support its use against Kovid-1.
Fox News hosts Tucker Carlson, Shawn Hannity and Laura Ingram all mentioned ivermectin as a possible treatment for Covid-1 for. This follows last year’s conservative commentators and former President Trump’s promotion of the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine as a possible Covid-1 treatment.
